Reform UK vs Liberal Democrats

Reform UK and the Liberal Democrats are perhaps the most ideologically opposed parties in British politics. Reform wants to freeze net migration, scrap net zero, and cut taxes. The Lib Dems favour open immigration, aggressive climate action, and higher public spending.

Reform UK draws heavily from working-class and lower-middle-class voters in the Midlands, North, and coastal towns — areas left behind by deindustrialisation. The Lib Dems draw from highly-educated, affluent, urban and suburban voters, particularly in the South West and leafy home counties.

Both parties have called for electoral reform, though for different reasons. Reform UK supports proportional representation because it believes the current system underrepresents them. The Lib Dems have long been advocates of PR. Beyond this, there is very little common ground.

Reform UK strongly supports Brexit and opposes any re-alignment with the EU. The Liberal Democrats support rejoining the single market and ultimately the EU. This remains a fundamental dividing line between the two parties.

A Lib Dem-Reform UK coalition or agreement would be almost inconceivable given their diametrically opposed positions on immigration, climate, the EU, and public spending.
